Missing Heroes

Heroes without a Face

Each year, as the honor roll is read, we remember our fallen heroes by hearing their names and seeing their faces. Yet, some of these heroes remain faceless in our memorial. While we know their names, we haven’t been able to find photographs to honor them fully. Below is a list of our "faceless heroes." We ask for your help in locating a photo of each so that we can complete their place in our memorial to the fallen.

Melvin George Bracha

BRACHA, Melvin George, Radioman Second Class, U.S. Navy, Service# 3934969, Enl: Canada, d. 2-Feb-1944, Walls of the Missing, World War II, Purple Heart

Bracha's family immigrated from North Dakota to Alberta in 1911, where Bracha was born in 1920 and raised in the Cardston area. He was living with his sister in Oregon when he enlisted with the US Navy as a Canadian citizen, and was one of the crew members of the U.S.S. Utah when it was sunk in the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. He was serving in the South Pacific aboard the U.S.S. De Haven (DD-469), a Fletcher-class destroyer of the United States Navy when it was bombed and sunk by enemy aircraft in the Solomon Islands, about 1 or 2 miles South of Savo Island. One bomb hit the bridge killing the commanding officer instantly and many of the crew in the superstructure below, including radiomen in the communications room below the bridge, which is likely where Bracha was stationed.
