A Story of Sweet Success

For more than 70 years, the DQ^® system's recipe for success has been simple. It's been a combination of hardworking people who own and operate restaurants, and great-tasting food and tempting treats served in our establishments.

Our phenomenal story began with the 10-cent sale of a then unnamed product on August 4, 1938, in Kankakee, Illinois. A father and son partnership in Green River, Illinois, had been experimenting with a soft frozen dairy product for some time. They contacted Sherb Noble, a good friend and customer, who agreed to run the "all you can eat" trial sale at his walk-in ice cream store. Within two hours, he dished out more than 1,600 servings of the new dessert.

Back then, food franchising was all but unheard of, but the new product's potential made it a natural for such a system. When the United States entered World War II in December 1941, there were fewer than 10 Dairy Queen^® stores. However, shortly after the war, the system took off at a pace virtually unrivaled before or since. With only 100 stores in 1947, it grew to 1,446 in 1950 and then to 2,600 in 1955. Today, the DQ^® system is one of the largest fast food systems in the world, with more than 6,000 restaurants in the United States, Canada and 18 other countries.

Although much has changed in the world and in the DQ^® system through the years, one constant has remained: DQ^® restaurants are still, and always have been, the place to find kids' sports teams celebrating a victory, business people on their lunch break and families taking time out to enjoy great food and soft serve treats. At Chief Mountain Truss Co, we are dedicated to providing homeowners with roof trusses they can feel secure and safe with. Based out of Cardston, we offer reliable services and top-quality customer care. 

The Golden Oak Room was built from 1920 to 1929 and was the last room constructed by Mr Hoet. The delicate honeycomb design in the ceiling has 61 pieces of oak in each tile!

There are three stone fireplaces in the house. Unfortunately, only one fireplace is left that contains the original mixture of beeswax used by Mr Hoet in applying a finish to these fireplaces.

We have been told by many that Mr Hoet had a sweetheart and was building this appealing house for her. Sadly, his sweetheart never came to Canada, and Mr Hoet never married. Fortunately, he left for us to enjoy, this fine masterpiece, this Labour of Love, this lovely home, which is now Cobblestone Manor.

This Cobblestone Manor has been designated as Alberta Historic Resource, and will therefore be preserved as the heritage it is.

Guero is a Spanish word used primarily in Mexico to describe foreigners, especially ones that have blonde hair and fair skin.

Guero Taco is a locally owned family business. We started this restaurant to provide fresh dining options and preserve a historic main street building.

Unfortunately, none of us are Mexican, hence the name. Our pale skin aside, we are committed to incorporating the fresh flavours inspired by Mexican cooking along with less traditional recipes you May not typically find in Mexico.

Stopping time has always been a wish of mine. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to stop time completely, but I have figured out how to freeze snippets of time through photography.

Becoming a photographer has been a journey for me. It certainly did not happen overnight. We decided to get a “good” camera when we became parents. Thanks to the wonderful world of digital, I had hundreds and hundreds of photos of my new babies downloaded to my computer. And you know what?
Every single shot was awful!

That was my turning point. I started by really paying attention to what I was doing. With lots of practice, and lots of research, I’m now a professional photographer. I love watching and capturing people's emotions. I love creating and securing memories.

The Stanford boys have always liked building things. Give us a problem and we’ll build something to fix it. 

Papa Stanford got his degree in physics and always had a knack for building mechanical things. From creating machines to assist in building his house, to building his own walk-in fridge and freezer, it seemed he could make anything. Dad passed on his love for custom fabrication and innovative problem-solving to his boys.

When dad’s boy, Tim, entered the environmental industry, he saw room for growth in designs that complicated and delayed work (like a simple rock preventing a hydrovac truck from digging). Intrigued, dad went to work at the shop, building solutions.

Leland, son #4, came into the picture after finishing a degree in mechanical engineering and spending a number of years as a project engineer for a robotic welding company. Seeing potential in dad’s small fab shop, Leland committed his knowledge in design, manufacturing, and systems to help build up the operation. 

We are still growing and looking forward to adding more capability to our operations. Here’s to many more years of doing what we love best:

The idea of Lariat Cross came from a book called, "Lariat Cross", by H. Kelvin Jensen, copyright 2007.
