Main Street Mural Statement

The recent installation of a mural on main street has caused a heated conversation on social media about the interpretation and intent of the artwork.

This piece was intended to compliment a crime prevention initiative, beautify Main Street, and draw attention to the Card Home for the tourism season. It was certainly not intended to be a historical or racial commentary.

The assumptions of the race and nature of the characters in the piece have evoked strong negative emotions from members of the community.  

Council has chosen to take the mural down and to look at better options for the area to support the initial goals of the piece and will be more sensitive to the concerns that were shared.
