Mayor's Message To Citizens (COVID-19)

 

Dear Citizens,

As your Mayor I feel it is my responsibility to address you during these uncertain times to provide an update on the status of your local government and what your Town Council and Administration are doing in response to this serious covid-19 outbreak.

On March 17th, the Town of Cardston activated its Emergency Coordination Centre, where we receive updates from the province twice a day, and closely monitor the situation as it evolves. We are taking appropriate measures and enacting continuity plans to ensure necessary services such as Water and Wastewater Treatment, Electrical Transmission, Fire, and Garbage Collection remain unaffected, as well as all other essential and critical services.

Let us all work together to slow the spread of this virus. Use the Town web site for news and updates. The site will direct you to the Alberta Government and Alberta Health web sites which have updates and guidelines. Make sure that what you share on social media is backed up by facts from credible sources.

We must all take measures to improve sanitation and cleanliness to keep ourselves safe. In all social situations, try to keep a safe distance from others to promote the social distancing intentions.

Critically, if you don’t feel well, please stay home and self-isolate.

If you need to see a doctor or nurse, please call ahead as directed by the local clinic and hospital. While incredibly busy, 811 is still the preferred contact to medical advice for the Province.

Currently, the library and all recreation facilities are closed until the Province instructs otherwise. Additional closures or changes to closure status will be posted on the Town website as they occur.  The Town office is open, but only for those wishing to do Town business. No activities are taking place in the gym or other rooms of the building.

Statistically, the senior population is particularly vulnerable to this virus. The Town has many seniors who risk exposure. For the rest of us who are currently healthy and able, please reach out to the seniors in the community. Offer to get groceries, shovel walks, run errands, pick up medication etc. Let us work as a community with compassion to care for each other. This extends to those who may not have financial resources to stockpile food and supplies. Be considerate of the needs of others when you go shopping, and help where you are able. In this time, volunteers will still be needed for certain social and welfare activities. If you are able, please seek to volunteer and support those in need. 

As the situation continues to evolve, we will provide timely updates on the Town website and on social media. Critical updates will be provided using the Town’s One-Call Message Express system, which can reach every resident in Town by phone, text, or email. If you have not yet signed up for this service, please visit the Town website and register your information so you can stay informed.

We wish you well, and hope that you will follow the advice given by our health officials, and that you will remain in good health as a result. We thank you in advance for helping us be proactive about protecting the health of our community.
