COVID-19 Update - May 29
May 29 2020
Dear citizens,
Here is an update on Covid-19 and related issues:
1. Covid-19 Cases
There are as of today 24 confirmed cases in the Cardston County-Kainai area. The good news is that 16 cases are recovered, leaving 8 active on reserve and in the County with no fatalities. Keep up the good work with physical distancing and hand washing and sanitation, even wearing masks when needed.
2. Town facilities
Today we have reopened our playgrounds with some restrictions. I am sure a happy news for many parents. The Town has posted guidelines at all locations. Please make sure that your children understand the need to sanitize their hands before going on structures and after they finish playing on them. Hand swashing when at home is another helpful precaution. Help them also understand the need to respect physical distancing to avoid the possibility of transmission of the Covid-19 virus. Enjoy the parks using precautionary measures.
3. Campground
As announced last week, the campground will be open as of June 1. Many reservations have been taken. It should be a busy time for our operators who will strictly follow the established and Town approved protocol to keep everybody safe.
4. Solar Farm
Today, the switch was pulled and the solar farm located in our industrial park is now live. As Council, we are pleased to have such facility in town as it will pay for itself and in years to come generate significant revenues. This solar farm will cover the cost of electricity on town owned facilities. We already have the Civic Center and the Ice Arena retrofitted with solar panels. The generation of power on these two facilities has proven to be very beneficial to the town without direct cost to the taxpayer.
5. Police request and report
At our last council meeting, Constable Payne made a request to our Town Council to amend our safety by-law. We heard at that meeting that gang activity has been increasing in town, with new graffiti appearing on businesses walls and town structures. The RCMP needed to see our by-law include gang activities with an offense related to any outer sign of affiliation with a gang. Council approved first reading. At our next regular meeting in June, the by-law will be passed and will give the RCMP and our Peace Officer the tool that need to enforce the law in Town.
Please continue to be vigilant, securing your properties and belongings. Report abnormal activity in your neighborhood. If you see a fight on Main Street, take a picture or a video, call the RCMP. If you see illicit activity around the window of a vehicle, try to make note of the licence plate and report it to the Police.
We need to work together to keep our town safe. Thank you!
6. Town Matters:
I wish to thank Councillor Court for being the deputy Mayor for the last 8 months. The Deputy mayor assists the Mayor with duties and also acts as the chairman for the monthly committee meeting. Our next Deputy Mayor is Councillor Drew.
Enjoy a wonderful warm weekend! Be safe and stay healthy!
Always at your service
Mayor Kronen
